DCS的關(guān)鍵是通信。也可以說數(shù)據(jù)公路是分散控制系統(tǒng)DCS的脊柱。由于它的任務(wù)是為系統(tǒng)所有部件之間提供通信網(wǎng)絡(luò)，因此，數(shù)據(jù)公路自身的設(shè)計(jì)就決定了總體的靈活性和安全性。數(shù)據(jù)公路的媒體可以是:一對絞線、同軸電纜或光纖電纜。
通過數(shù)據(jù)公路的設(shè)計(jì)參數(shù)，基本上可以了解一個(gè)特定DCS系統(tǒng)的相對優(yōu)點(diǎn)與弱點(diǎn):
(1) 系統(tǒng)能處理多少I/O信息
(2) 系統(tǒng)能處理多少與控制有關(guān)的控制回路的信息
(3) 能適應(yīng)多少用戶和裝置(CRT、控制站等)
(4) 傳輸數(shù)據(jù)的完整性是怎樣徹底檢查的
(5) 數(shù)據(jù)公路的大允許長度是多少
(6) 數(shù)據(jù)公路能支持多少支路
(7) 數(shù)據(jù)公路是否能支持有其他制造廠生產(chǎn)的硬件(可編程序控制器、計(jì)算機(jī)、數(shù)據(jù)記錄裝置等)。
